Our son's habit was easy to correct. I lathered the thumb with a foul tasting substance called "Stop", and within 8 hours his thumb sucking days were over. (Caution: Projectile vomiting involved.) For our daughter we followed the "Paci" breaking protocol of methodically increasing the size of a hole cut into the tip of her pacifier until she lost interest. Within 2 weeks she had abandoned the "paci" and replaced it with her left index finger. Trying the "Stop" liquid on her was an experiment in futility. No matter what amount I used, she would keep sucking! We tried the socks over her hands, which involved taping and then pinning the socks to the sleeves of her pajamas. She managed, to my bewilderment, to undo all of that, each time, without fail.
Taping, pinning, wrapping, foul tasting painting, nothing worked. Her finger sucking was now in the advanced stages of driving Dad crazy! The spacing in her top front teeth became more obvious, and when she closed her mouth there was no contact with the upper and lower teeth, just the gaping space created by her finger. She began to chew differently to compensate for the space, and she had now developed a slight lisp when she spoke. I knew that dental and skeletal changes from this simple, seemingly harmless, habit had already begun to adversely affect her bite. If left unhindered, she would need major orthodontic correction later.
I got online and found Handaid at yourhandaid.com. With just a few measurements and a scanned image of the offending hand and digit (not an easy accomplishment on a toddler but since her "blankie" and puzzle pieces made it through unscathed, she finally consented) we had ordered a custom made finger jacket. A few weeks later our suede leather finger jacket with Velcro sucking deterrent and twin thumb screw closure apparatus arrived. Luckily, they included a second one, for it was only a matter of hours before her right index finger proved worthy of the attention also.
We are 2 weeks into our "Handaid" trial. The gloves stay on except for meals and bath time. I'm impressed with the product.
